Oblivious | One-Hundred-Word Story

From a distance, it resembled a golden snake, curled up on the floor. Two ladies stood talking, one straddling it. I walked over. Coming closer, the gold sparkled. Whatever it was, the straddler was now standing on it; one end poking out from between her high heel and shoe. “Excuse me, ma’am,” I said, reaching down to retrieve whatever it was. When she stepped aside, I realized it was an onyx and diamond bracelet. An older woman approached. “Oh, thank you, sir. My husband gave that to me.” The other ladies continued talking. Did they not know or not care?
